Jumping Waves with Who's That Dog? The new release from Jo-Ann Foo
February 22nd, 2023What was the inspiration for your book?
My grandmother loved dogs (her favourite was a black and white cocker spaniel called Playboy who she had for years) and I think she passed on that love to me. I’ve always been fascinated by dogs and the fact that each breed – and each dog - has its own distinct character; if you see a cocker spaniel from afar, you can always pick it – long ears, nose to the ground and that weaving little walk, and you can’t help wondering what it’s story it. And it’s the same with any dog. “Who’s That Dog?” is essentially about that curiosity to know more about the dogs that you’re likely to see when you’re out and about, but it’s more than that – it talks to each individual’s good and not so good traits, and shows that everyone is loved regardless, so you should be happy with what you have (and who you are!)
When do you write?
These days, usually at night, when my little boy (who’s now 1 year old), has gone to bed and the house is quiet, except for the annoying sound of the cat meowing for attention.
Do you have a favourite place to write?
I tend to only write at my desk, which is more about function than favouritism, but when it comes to inspiration, nothing beats being out on a walk.
What would be the title of your memoirs?
“Jumping waves”. Because sometimes you just have to overcome the challenges to push through and feel that sense of achievement and freedom once you’ve past the breakers.
Your greatest achievement so far … ?
Being happy with who I am, or at least, being more accepting of me and being a person who doesn’t just talk about doing things, but actually doing it.
What is next for you?
I’ve spent a lot of my life doing things I want to do – I’m now looking forward to supporting my son growing up (… along with trying to manage a full time job and manage a household all on my own!)
